Track:  Clinical

The number of U.S. overdose deaths related to Rx opioids has nearly quadrupled since 1999, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC reports that the amount of Rx opioids sold in that time period also quadrupled, even though the amount of pain reported by Americans did not change overall. In response, clinicians are exploring ways to manage patients’ pain safely and mitigate risks associated with Rx opioids. At the same time, they are responding to the gamut of health issues related to the opioid crisis, such as HIV and Hepatitis C infections, opioid-overdose education and intervention, and medication-assisted treatment. The Clinical Track will cover these topics, as well as innovative technologies, so that physicians, dentists and other healthcare professionals are well equipped in their critical roles in the nation’s battle again Rx drug and heroin abuse.
