The National Institutes of Health Informatics (NIHI) is Canada's first national organization dedicated to fostering Health Informatics (HI) innovation, research and education. NIHI is a virtual, self-sustaining institute of institutes. One of its goals is to be a catalyst in the development of HI initiatives in academia and industry. NIHI seeks to serve as a co-ordinator and facilitator in the development of initiatives dedicated to HI research and education.
 
NIHI operates under the Community of Practice concept. It was established as a federal not-for-profit corporation in Canada. in 2008. NIHI was launched with the participation of researchers and teachers from most Canadian universities and colleges with existing or incipient HI education or research programs. The Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) represents approximately 5,000 Health Information Management (HIM®) professionals across Canada and is the certifying body and national association that represents leadership and excellence in health information management.
