National Conference on Alcohol & Addiction Disorders

Conference begins Aug. 19 in Disneyland

ANAHEIM As the demand for addiction recovery increases, so too does the opportunity for unscrupulous organizations to take advantage of the situation.

That’s why the 2018 National Conference on Alcohol & Addiction Disorders, which runs from Aug. 19-22 at the Disneyland Hotel in Disneyland, California, will hold a panel discussion that features Tony Saavedra, an investigative reporter specializing in legal affairs for the Orange County Register. It will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21.

Panelists will share their expertise on the problem and how treatment recovery organizations can differentiate themselves from disreputable businesses.

The problem has become so pervasive that Facebook recently started requiring addiction treatment centers to obtain certification from monitoring firm LegitScript before being approved to advertise in-person addiction treatment services in the United States.

“There already are so many barriers to treatment such as cost and availability – and now we’re seeing some corrupt practices,” said Doug Edwards, director of the Institute for the Advancement of Behavioral Healthcare, which convenes the annual conference. “Industry executives today find themselves in an overwhelming position where they must differentiate their organizations from bad actors to help consumers and media navigate the system. Additionally, legitimate organizations must be able to demonstrate that they operate with maximum integrity. The conference has convened an expert panel to discuss their practical approaches for battling the ongoing negative perceptions caused by a small number of businesses.”

Saavedra’s work has been recognized by the Best of the West, National Headliners, the Associated Press Sports Editors, the California Newspaper Publishers Association, the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association and the Orange County Press Club.

The conference’s comprehensive agenda also will address the wide range of drug addiction and co-existing mental health problems.

National Conference on Alcohol & Addiction Disorders

Begins Aug. 19 in Disneyland

Alcohol abuse is responsible for 40% more deaths than opioids

DISNEYLAND It causes 40 percent more deaths than opioid overdoses, but alcohol abuse doesn’t garner the same attention. That’s why it will be a focus of the 2018 National Conference on Alcohol & Addiction Disorders on August 19-22 at the Disneyland Hotel in Disneyland, California.

Leading practitioners, researchers and advocates will meet to share evidence-based treatments for alcohol abuse as well as to celebrate recovery solutions that work for various diverse populations.

There also will be several experts with ties to Southern California who will be speaking.

“Many health problems are linked to alcohol abuse and misuse,” said Doug Edwards, director of the Institute for the Advancement of Behavioral Healthcare, which convenes the annual conference. “We want to ensure that alcohol abuse is a top priority for policy-makers, practitioners and communities.”

An estimated 88,000 Americans die from alcohol-related causes annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In addition, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Treatment Episode Data Set has consistently found that alcohol is among the leading primary or secondary substances cited in treatment center admissions.

The Institute’s goal with this conference is to bring greater attention to alcohol misuse, binge drinking, underage drinking, fetal alcohol syndrome and use of alcohol with other drugs.

The comprehensive agenda also will address the wide range of drug addiction and co-existing mental health problems, as well as a separate track for executives of behavioral healthcare organizations.

Speakers include:

  • Tony Hoffman, former BMX Pro, U.S. Olympic coach and person in recovery. Hoffman is a former BMX Elite Pro and placed second at the 2016 World Championships. He also has been sober since 2007. Hoffman’s BMX career started in high school, when he was a top-ranked BMX amateur with multiple endorsements. He also started drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana, and using prescription painkillers. In 2007, he was sent to prison for two years, but in time began rebuilding his life’s purpose. After being paroled in late 2008, Hoffman started living out his dream with his addiction behind him.

  • Adi Jaffe, CEO of IGNTD. Jaffe is a nationally recognized expert on mental health, addiction and stigma. He lectures in the psychology department at UCLA and is the president and co-founder of IGNTD, which offers experiences for couples and individuals seeking recovery.

  • Pete Nielsen, CEO, California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals.
Nielsen played a major role in navigating the consolidation of the California Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors and the California Association of Addiction Recovery Resources. He is currently the co-chair for the criminal justice credential for the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium and is on the advisory board for the Behavioral Health Association of Providers. Additionally, he is chair of the workforce development group for the Youth Advisory Group with the Department of Health Care Services and is trained as a marriage family therapist.

  • Dan Griffin, CEO & lead consultant, Griffin Recovery Enterprises, Inc. Griffin, senior fellow of The Meadows, has dedicated his work and life to exploring and redefining what it means to be a man in the 21st century. Griffin is dedicated to helping men be better men by understanding the impact the “Man Rules” have on their personal lives and their professional lives. Griffins’ newest book, “A Man’s Way through Relationships,” is the first book written specifically to help men create healthy relationships while navigating the challenges of the “Man Rules.”

The conference also will feature annual awards to industry leaders. This year’s Ashley Addiction Treatment Center award winners are Faith Strong, Ashley’s Father Joseph C. Martin Professional Excellence Award, and Marvin Ventrell, Ashley Addiction Treatment Innovator Award.

National Addiction Conference Renamed to Include Focus on Alcohol

The Institute for the Advancement of Behavioral Healthcare announces today that its signature addiction treatment conference will be renamed the National Conference on Alcohol and Addiction Disorders as it works to elevate the discussion about the impact of alcohol and drugs in our communities.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 88,000Americans die from alcohol-related causes annually, which is nearly 40% more than the number of deaths attributed to opioid overdoses. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Treatment Episode Data Set (SAMHSA TEDS) has consistently found that alcohol is among the leading primary or secondary substances leading to treatment center admissions. Yet public attention on alcohol has not been as widespread as with opioids, and the Institute aims to bring greater attention to alcohol use, binge drinking, underage drinking, fetal alcohol syndrome, and co-occurring use of alcohol with other drugs through the conference, its digital and print publications, and its Webinar series.

The conference will continue to offer a comprehensive curriculum addressing the wide range of drug addiction and co-occurring mental health problems, as well as a separate track for executives of behavioral healthcare organizations. Alcohol will be among a wide range of topics at the conference, widely regarded as one of the leading addiction treatment events in the country.

“Alcohol use and misuse are associated with a myriad of negative health conditions as well as billions of dollars in economic damage,” said Institute director Doug Edwards. “Even as opioids dominate headlines, we aim to ensure alcohol also remains a top priority on Americans’ radar by convening discussions for preventing underage drinking, highlighting evidence-based treatments for alcohol abuse, and celebrating those in recovery.”

The next National Conference on Alcohol and Addiction Disorders (NCAD) is August 19-22 in Anaheim, California. For more details on the conference and to register to attend, visit www.ncadcon.com. Dominion Diagnostics (www.dominiondiagnostics.com) is the 2018 and 2019 Title Sponsor of the event.

The Institute is the producer of the country’s largest annual gathering on the opioid crisis, the National Rx Drug Abuse & Heroin Summit (www.nationalrxdrugabusesummit.org), as well as several regional conferences addressing opioid treatment. In addition, the Institute is launching this year the National Cocaine, Meth & Stimulant Summit (www.stimulantsummit.com).
