Driving Community Solutions for the Opioid Crisis
The opioid crisis has become America’s #1 public health emergency. Treatment professionals are in a position to influence everyday citizens and policy makers alike, but finding the right avenues can be a challenge. At the same time, treatment professionals can struggle with staying up-to-date on the latest developments in America’s prescription drug abuse and heroin epidemic.
To address these needs, Addiction Professional magazine has organized a lunch’n’learn in San Francisco to discuss how treatment professionals can better work together and become effective change agents for educating the public as well as helping to bring about a comprehensive prevention and broad-based treatment strategy.
Upon attending this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand recent developments in the opioid crisis and its impact on the local community
- Prepare discussion points to share with the community
- Explore ways treatment professionals of all types can better work together to ensure a recovery-oriented system of care
One hour of continuing education credit will be available.

Anthony Mele, a licensed psychologist, brings almost 25 years of clinical expertise and executive leadership on both the provider and payer sides of behavioral healthcare. Mele’s wide range of clinical expertise includes: the assessment and treatment of co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders in adolescents and adults, the use of telehealth to manage chronic medical conditions, and the development of non-pharmacologic interventions for individuals with cognitive impairment.
David Burke, LAADC-CA, SAP

David Burke works in the Sacramento area helping families identify what needs to change in order for things to get better. If a family is seeking consultation for substance abuse intervention, David knows things in the individual’s life are not going well. He reviews each family as unique entity with their own set of challenges requiring specialized intervention. The intervention is conducted with the utmost care and professionalism. David designs the intervention plan to get the individual to accept help and go directly into treatment.

Russ Nordmeyer, LMFT
Primary Therapist, Foundations San Francisco
Russ Nordmeyer completed his master’s in counseling psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies in 2012. During his course of study, he trained as a counselor at the Marin AIDS Project. Following graduation from CIIS, he interned at California Pacific Medical Center’s Institute for Health and Healing, where he was trained in expressive arts and guided imagery. Russ also led a cardiac rehabilitation support group and worked as an integral part of the Palliative Care team.
Following his training at CPMC, Russ completed his internship hours working as an intern therapist at The Liberation Institute. In August 2014, Russ began working at Foundations San Francisco as an Intake Coordinator. In 2015, he was promoted to Primary Therapist at Foundations, where he treats clients with co-occurring addiction and mental health issues.
