The opioid crisis has become America’s #1 public health emergency. Treatment professionals are in a position to influence everyday citizens and policy makers alike, but finding the right avenues can be a challenge. At the same time, treatment professionals can struggle with staying up-to-date on the latest developments in America’s prescription drug abuse and heroin epidemic.
 
To address these needs, Addiction Professional magazine has organized a lunch’n’learn in New York to discuss how treatment professionals can better work together and become effective change agents for educating the public as well as helping to bring about a comprehensive prevention and broad-based treatment strategy.
 
Upon attending this course, participants will be able to:

Deni Carise, Ph.D.

Deni Carise, Ph.D is a Clinical Psychologist and part of the recovery community for over 30 years.  She is currently Chief Clinical Officer (CCO) of Recovery Centers of America (RCA), and helped raise $350 million for this start-up company to create 8 treatment/recovery campuses.  Previously she held similar positions at CRC Health Group, Sierra Tucson, Phoenix House, and was an NIH-funded scientist and Director of the Treatment Systems Section at Treatment Research Institute. She has published over 100 articles, books and chapters. Dr Carise has been an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Perelman School of Medicine since 1997.  She has worked extensively internationally, with treatment providers in Nigeria, Mexico, Thailand, Egypt, Greece, Singapore, Brazil, and China to develop national systems of clinical treatment delivery.  She is quoted in approximately 50 popular press publications each year, on numerous tv shows, and has presented over 200 lectures by invitation (approximately 35 internationally) in the past 15 years She is also a frequent blogger on Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/deni-carise) on topics including treatment, recovery, prescription drug abuse, Healthcare Reform, Parity and emerging drug trends.
Tom Garofola
Chief Marketing Office, Retreat Premier Addiction Treatment 
 
Tom Garofola is Retreat’s Chief Marketing Officer. Tom has been with Retreat since its planning stages. Tom holds a Master’s Degree in Human Services (MHS) and is a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC). He began his career as an addictions counselor. In 2001, he was asked to head up the planning efforts for the Criminal and Juvenile Justice Subcommittee of New Jersey Governor’s Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse (GCADA). Currently, Tom serves as the President for the New Jersey Chapter of Employee Assistance Professionals Association (NJEAPA). In his private time, Tom volunteers as the leader of a family support group and serves as the assistant director of a youth basketball league. 
 
Mark Linder, PhD, PhD, DABCC, FACB
Prescient Medicine
 
Dr. Linder is a tenured Professor of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Louisville. He is a Director of Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology and the Director of the Prescient Medicine-Jefferson pharmacogenetic diagnostics laboratory. Dr. Linder has been actively involved in pharmacogenetics research and translation of that research into clinical services. Dr. Linder has served as PI on numerous grants and contracts and has an extensive publication record. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (NACB) and has served on a number of committees for the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC), the International Association for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology (IATDMCT), and the International Federation for Clinical Chemistry (IFCC). Dr. Linder is also an active member of the Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC). His scientific interests include plasma cell-free nucleic acid biomarkers and clinical applications of pharmacogenetics. Dr. Linder is a thought leader in the field of pharmacogenetics, having developed several pharmacogenetic tests now being used by Prescient Medicine-Jefferson and holds a patent on a companion informatic software application for pharmacogenetics.
