The opioid crisis has become America’s #1 public health emergency. Treatment professionals are in a position to influence everyday citizens and policy makers alike, but finding the right avenues can be a challenge. At the same time, treatment professionals can struggle with staying up-to-date on the latest developments in America’s prescription drug abuse and heroin epidemic.
 
To address these needs, Addiction Professional magazine has organized a lunch’n’learn in Detroit to discuss how treatment professionals can better work together and become effective change agents for educating the public as well as helping to bring about a comprehensive prevention and broad-based treatment strategy.
 
Upon attending this course, participants will be able to:

  • Prepare discussion points to share with the community
  • Explore ways treatment professionals of all types can better work together to ensure a recovery-oriented system of care

Stephen Wiland, LMSW, ICADC
Director, Foundations Detroit

Stephen Wiland is a Licensed Master Social Worker and Internationally Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor with over 27 years of experience working with numerous clinically complex populations, including individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Currently serving as the Director of Foundations Recovery Network’s new outpatient clinic in the metropolitan Detroit area, Steve brings a wealth of practice knowledge and experience in various evidence-based approaches, including motivational interviewing, cognitive and dialectical behavior therapies, and trauma-informed/trauma-specific treatment interventions. Steve’s prior work experience includes over 20 years in Michigan’s Community Mental Health system, where he earned a reputation as a champion of implementing and developing effective treatment services for those with co-occurring addictive disorders. He also teaches in the School of Social Work at the University of Michigan, and is a popular trainer and conference speaker. Steve’s own lived experience of dual disorders and dual recovery has been a core element informing his clinical practice and teaching efforts.
Judge Linda Davis​
Founder, Operation Rx Macomb County
 
In March of 2000, Linda Davis was appointed by Governor Engler to the 41B District Court in Mount Clemens, and then was elected in November of 2000.  She was Chief Judge from January 2002 until 2010.  She implemented a Drug/Sobriety Court at 41b in 2011, and currently has graduated numerous participants.  Judge Davis remains active in her community and is involved with educating young people, doctors, lawyers and the public regarding prescription drug use.  She speaks throughout the state as President of F.A.N (Families Against Narcotics).  She has received several prestigious awards from the FBI, Care House, Girl Scouts of the USA, Macomb Community College Outstanding Alumna Award, Henry Ford Hospital, Center Line H.S. Most Distinguished Graduate and Humanitarian of the Year, Leadership Macomb, and has been inducted into the Macomb Hall of Fame.  She has been appointed by Governor Snyder as Chairperson of the Prescription Drug and Opioid Abuse Task Force.  She is the founder of Operation Rx Macomb County, a county-wide project for preventing abuse, addiction and overdoses, and is currently initiating a program called Hope not Handcuffs.  
 
Jack Sodak
Director of Outpatient Services, Retreat
 
Jack is the Director of Outpatient Services for Retreat @Lancaster County in Akron, Pennsylvania. Jack is a substance abuse professional with over 25 years of experience implementing programs and providing direct care to individuals and families.
A licensed professional counselor, certified addiction counselor, and certified clinical supervisor,  Jack has established specialty programs in an inpatient and outpatient settings. He has worked with specific populations such as impaired professionals, adolescents, young adults, co-occurring disorders, couples and families.
He has had a private practice, consulted with local schools and county probation departments, served on student assistance teams, provides public speaking and trainings for other substance abuse professionals, and has trained many addictions professionals in the field over his career.
Lastly, Sodak currently has  established a growing outpatient  facility for Retreat at Lancaster County that provides partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient treatment for individuals and families affected by substance abuse.
