The Opioid Crisis: Addressing Shame, Trauma, and Stigma
The widespread misuse of prescription opioids and the use of heroin has revealed a country in deep pain: physical, emotional, and spiritual. People often use opioids to escape this pain, as well as the associated shame and trauma. At the same time, people in recovery from opioid use disorder face stigmatizing attitudes both within the treatment community itself and in their everyday lives. Yet lost in the national discussion about the opioid crisis is a meaningful conversation about how to help those with physical, spiritual, and emotional wounds. Join us for this important conversation on helping individuals and communities in the midst of this public health emergency.
Upon attending this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand recent developments in the opioid crisis and its impact on the local community
- Prepare discussion points to share with the community
- Explore ways treatment professionals of all types can better work together to address shame, trauma and stigma.
One hour of continuing education credit will be available.

DiGiulio brings a long standing career as a Film Producer and a depth oriented approach to her clinical work as a therapist. Her journey began retelling human interest dramas that explored lives marginalized through criminal negligence, sexual abuse, and addiction. Through this work, she discovered a growing need to see through the wound toward a deeper understanding of what motivates the human spirit. She earned her Master’s degree in Clinical Counseling & Depth Psychology at the Pacifica Graduate Institute and is working toward LMFT licensure.

Leslie M. Cox, Clinical Director at Hotel California by the Sea, is an EMDR practitioner and Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Ms. Cox formerly worked for Orange County Health Care Agency in chemical dependency as well as Orange County Drug Court. Ms. Cox then worked for 5 years at the Long Beach Veterans Administration Hospital as part of their PACT, "Patient Aligned Care Team," program. She was an integral member of the team by making initial assessments of the Veteran’s Mental Health and then maximizing all resources available to them. Ms. Cox is trained in EMDR, (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), and received additional training and certification in it. Leslie is currently an active and founding member of “BisKids”, or, “Believe in Sobriety Kids”. This non-profit self-funded organization educates and informs children about addiction using age-appropriate games and play.

Phil Scherer is the Chief Clinical Officer at New Directions For Women in Costa Mesa CA. Mr. Scherer is certified through several State and National Credentialing bodies in the intervention and treatment of people suffering from addictive disorders.
Mr. Scherer has worked in the field of addiction since 1991; he has worked in all areas of treatment including Clinical Supervisor, Adolescent Inpatient, Adult Inpatient, Adult Intensive Outpatient, Adult and Adolescent Continuing Care, and Adult and Adolescent Family Education programming.
Mr. Scherer has been treating pathological gamblers since 1993 and started treating other behavioral addictions in 1996. He has been involved in trainings around the country in the Identification and Treatment of Pathological Gambling and other Addictions since 1999.
He is also a trained interventionist and is a Certified Intervention Professional. He was originally trained in the Johnson Model of intervention in 1996. He has since been trained in the ARISE Model as well as the Systemic Family Systems Model of intervention as well. He helped develop and is a trainer in The Family Meeting Approach to Intervention. He is currently serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association of Intervention Specialists, Inc. and is the current President of the International Interventionists Credentialing Board, Inc. He is a sought after trainer who has trained nationally and internationally on identifying, intervening on, and treating addictive disorders and other problematic behaviors.
