Name
W10 - Teaching Grounding and Distress Tolerance Using the Expressive Arts: Trauma-Focused Solutions for Clients in Recovery (1.5 CE)
Date & Time
Saturday, October 14, 2017, 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
Description
The skills of grounding and distress tolerance are vital for survivors of trauma. Both skills can assist trauma survivors to live a more meaningful life, and their regular use can allow a client to better tolerate treatment. In this session, participants will learn how to use expressive arts therapy approaches to more effectively teach grounding and distress tolerance in clinical settings and will leave this session with no fewer than five new skills for thinking outside of the box in their clinical repertoire.
Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
- Explain the concept of grounding and distress tolerance and why teaching it to clients is relevant in trauma-focused care.
- Implement an expressive arts process to teach grounding and distress tolerance in a clinical setting (individual or group), using at least three creative art forms.
- Develop a treatment plan appropriate for the clinical setting in which the participant works, utilizing expressive arts approaches alongside the participant’s primary approach to psychotherapy.
