In the aftermath of traumatic and victimizing experiences, some 75% of individual’s evidence resilience, while some 25% develop PTSD and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. This presentation will discuss what distinguishes these two groups and the implications for treatment, using a Constructive Narrative treatment perspective. Traumatized individuals often experience a range of emotions such as shame, guilt, grief, anger, anxiety and depression. How to individualize and tailor treatment depending upon the patient’s dominant emotional reactions and ways to bolster the patient’s resilience will be highlighted.
 
Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Describe what distinguishes individuals who evidence resilience versus those who develop PTSD and co-occurring psychiatric disorders following traumatic events.
  • Discuss the treatment implications, using a Constructive Narrative treatment perspective.
  • Describe ways to bolster the patient's resilience in six domains (physical, interpersonal, emotional, cognitive, behavioral and spiritual)
