Description
The drug scene for young adults is ever evolving. Nonmedical prescription-psychostimulant use, as well as misuse of prescribed stimulants among young adults, is misunderstood and dangerous. This session will present the dynamics of psychostimulant misuse among young adults, particularly college students, examining both nonmedical use of prescription psychostimulants as well as misuse of these drugs by those who are prescribed them. This session will examine how cultural norms influence this problem, resulting in further complexity for clinical professionals.

Objectives:
- Describe psychostimulant use disorder in the context of both nonmedical use of prescription stimulants and misuse of prescribed stimulants.
- Identify etiology and consequences of misuse of psychostimulants in a young adult population.
- Evaluate how cultural norms impact individual’s use, misuse, addiction and recovery, contrasting psychostimulants with other drugs.
