Description
While public attention is on opioids, stimulant addictions are more prevalent among those arrested in the United States. Serious substance use disorders are indicated in more than 65% of recent arrestees, and about a third are injecting on a regular basis. Serious substance use disorders place huge demands on law enforcement, correctional facilities and public resources. This translates into high costs, not to mention public health risks. Appropriate case finding strategies and treatment for substance use disorders offer potential for a substantial return on the treatment investment. Pragmatic strategies for screening and intervening in the cycle of substance use and incarceration will be discussed.

Objectives:
- Name the three most prevalent serious substance use disorders among recent arrestees.
- Describe a pragmatic strategy for identifying and intervening with offenders affected by substance use disorders.
- List the six screening questions that can identify serious substance use disorders in correctional populations.
