Description
The effective treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in conjunction with co-occurring substance use disorders has long plagued professionals, their patients and families. Psychostimulants are the most common treatment modality but often contribute to the cycle of relapse. Untangling these issues can be a long and arduous road. This presentation illustrates the nuances among the symptoms of each disorder, describes the regulatory interactions between ADHD and substance use, and offers a balance of practical strategies and tools for managing symptoms of ADHD while navigating the process of recovery at different stages.

Objectives:
- Determine the overlapping symptoms of ADHD, substance use and withdrawal from substances.
- Describe and understand the regulatory effects of substances on ADHD symptoms.
