Description
Research has suggested that treating people for opioid use disorder in jails and prisons is a promising strategy to address incidents of overdose. While comprehensive treatment has not been the traditional role of correctional facilities, results have shown that it is feasible. The Rhode Island Department of Corrections is currently implementing a state-wide MAT program, offering all three types of FDA approved MAT. This session will focus on the overcoming barriers to MAT in correctional facilities and early results of the program. In the first year of the program there was a significant decrease in overdose deaths.

Objectives:
- Name the benefits of using MAT for those in jails and prisons.
- Identify challenges of each of the three types of MAT in jails and prisons.
- Describe methods for working with security staff.
