Experts recognize the value of a comprehensive community-based intervention strategy involving prevention, treatment, and recovery in reducing the burden of rural opioid use. This session will explore the prevalence of rural opioid use across different rural populations; effective components of an integrated community-based strategy involving hospitals, health care providers, public health, schools, local government, law enforcement, EMS, and community leaders; and state level strategies to engage key stakeholders to address rural opioid use.

Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Establish and coordinate community-based treatment programs for individuals with opioid use disorders including buprenorphine programs through hub and spoke models as well as traditional supporting substance use, mental health, and co-occurring disorder services.
