Many individuals with addiction disorders have experienced intergenerational trauma that heavily influences their substance use as well as their recovery processes. Those seeking help might not recognize that addiction can be intergenerational. Additionally, they may block out traumatic events that contribute to their addiction. In such cases, treatment is often challenging, and relapse is more likely. Patients and clinicians are understandably skeptical of how addiction persists within a family, wondering if genes are truly playing a role. This panel session will address what a history of trauma has to do with addiction and substance use and offer insights into the treatment techniques for coping with intergenerational trauma. Panelists will address the mechanisms of trauma transmission across generations as well as factors related to individual, family, community, and culture, presented in the context of their separate and combined impact. This panel also will offer information on factors that expedite the dissemination of trauma through generations.

Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Assess the impact of intergenerational trauma on the community.
  • Recognize the unique differences between trauma resulting from direct victimization and trauma that is transmitted from generation to generation.
  • Discuss intergenerational trauma from a mental health perspective.
