Description
Danielle Matthew, LMFT

With the increased prevalence and visibility of bullying in our society, it is critical to change the conversation. How do we talk to and empower the victims of bullying (whether they are kids, teens, or adults), when safety is difficult to ensure at schools, in workplaces, and especially online? How do we address bullying when “boys will be boys” and “mean girls” are seen as normal behaviors? Danielle Matthew, LMFT, presents her strategies for communication, including the three E’s—empathy, empowerment, and engagement—as a model for changing the conversation about bullying. The three E’s will be discussed in depth, looking at how parents, educators, mental health professionals, and citizens can use this model of communication to address bullying in schools, work places, and society at large. Practical tools for teaching this model to parents, educators, and youth to improve treatment outcomes for victims of bullying will also be shared.

Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Understand the principles of the three E’s and be able to identify specific examples of each principle.
  • Utilize this model of communication to address bullying with their clients, support system, or community at large.
  • Apply practical tools to teach this model of communication to parents, educators, and youth, including interventions for common struggles in utilization.
