This session will begin with the discussion of how identity formation gets disrupted, disconnecting adolescents from their bodies and impacting sense of identity at a vulnerable age. This often results in adolescent’s self-worth centered around weight and societal weight stigmas. We will discuss how weight stigma and biases play a large role in the development of eating disorders in the millennial population and across cultures. You will learn how to be educated in ways to decrease weight stigma. Next, yoga therapy will be introduced along with examples of how to apply this modality with clients struggling with body/self-image and attendees will then have the opportunity to learn how to use yoga movement to focus on safely re-connecting with one’s body to increase sense of self. Finally, we will learn about what treatment teams can do to provide a more holistic, body-based treatment approach for clients needing to find safer ways to re-connect with self and explore what defines them.

Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Identify influences, especially society/media that help perpetuate weight stigma which can turn into eating disorders.
  • Understand the relationship between weight stigma, depression, and decreased productivity.
  • Apply yoga therapy and explain its role in encouraging a safe re-connection with self, increasing insight and body awareness
