Kids today. They just don’t do things the way their parents did, and digital technology is the reason. Gen Z and millennials learn about sex and romance not through face-to-face trial and error, but through online interactions – social media, dating and hookup apps, webcams, porn, sexting, etc. Plenty of millennials say they’ve never gone on a date that wasn’t set up through an app. Others have had torrid relationships without ever being in the same room as their partner. At least a few will tell you they have come to prefer online relationships and digital sexual encounters over meeting, dating, and getting it on in the real world – mostly because online interactions are easier and require less emotional vulnerability. This is especially likely with young male users of porn, many of whom report an inability to achieve and/or maintain an erection with real-world partners, even though they have no such issues when looking at pornography. This phenomenon is so common now that we have a name for it: Porn-Induced Erectile Dysfunction (PIED). At the end of the day, however, most young people do just fine with dating and sexuality, even if their elders think they’re not going about it the right way.

Upon completion of the session, attendees will be able to:
  • Understand and accept that when it comes to sex and romance, “digital” does not necessarily mean wrong or unhealthy.
  • Identify signs and symptoms that occur when online dating and sexuality spins out of control.
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of Porn-Induced Erectile Dysfunction, and recommend effective treatment.
