It is critical to understand the intersection of trauma and addiction. Does trauma cause addiction? Does a lifestyle of addiction invite or make more likely traumatic experiences? Addiction to substances such as alcohol and opioids is having a profound impact on public health. This session will define addiction and trauma and describe the complex relationship between them. Participants will learn the impact of early and repeated traumatic events on substance use—including alcohol and opioids—and recognize trauma as a clear risk factor for developing substance use disorders. We will also explore recovery-oriented treatment strategies.
