Gender Matters
Description
The epidemic of methamphetamine misuse and addiction is only growing in the gay community. Issues of multiple diagnoses, internalized homophobia, stigma around sex and sexuality, as well as underlying mood disorders are the norm in individuals seeking treatment. Addressing only the issues around substance use limits successful outcomes, as heteronormative sex, issues of gender, and ideas about sexuality have often impacted the self-esteem and functioning of gay men over time. Without addressing these multifaceted and dynamic clinical issues, treatment gains will be minimal and will decrease the likelihood of long-term recovery. This session will introduce attendees to a comprehensive treatment plan to address the multiple treatment areas in efforts to promote recovery and minimize relapse.
