“Facing Addiction in America” is the 2016 Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs and Health. This Report discusses approaches to effectively address the public health crisis of substance misuse and substance use disorders (SUDs); and is designed to shift the way our society thinks about these issues while promoting evidence-based interventions to prevent and treat SUDs. Dr. Johnson will provide an overview of the data and information contained in the report, including the neurobiology of substance use, misuse, and SUD; prevention programs and policies; early intervention, treatment, and management of SUD; recovery; health care systems; and financing.

Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
  • To discuss the underlying neurobiology of substance use disorders (SUDs)
  • Describe public health strategies to prevent substance misuse and SUDs
  • Identify and assess evidence-based strategies to identify and treat SUDs
