Name
E31 - Complex Models of Sexual Health in the LGBT Community: The Impact of Addiction on Healthy Sexuality (1.50 CEs)
Date & Time
Saturday, August 19, 2017, 10:15 AM - 11:45 AM
Jeff Zacharias
Description
Addiction, co-occurring mental illness and trauma often have issues related to unhealthy sexual behaviors or traumas at their core. Knowing that clients are quite likely going to engage in some form of sex during their recovery process, clinicians need to understand the role of healthy sexuality as it relates to success of their individual clients. A strong knowledge of the various models of sexual health available to clients and how clinicians can support their clients in understanding and exploring these models will strengthen their recovery process.

Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Identify the ways unresolved childhood sexual trauma leads to behaviors that impede a young male client’s development as well as their path to recovery.
  • Assess the importance of finding a new tribe of men where re-learning of healthy coping skills can begin, normalization can occur and trauma healing may begin.
  • Explain experiential techniques employed by the clinical team members at The Refuge to break these destructive patterns.
  • Assess the importance of finding meaning and strength from our trauma to provide a more solid foundation for long-term healing.
