John Briere, PhD, an associate professor of psychiatry and psychology at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, will explore tools and strategies for addressing these reactions, such as mindfulness; meta-cognitive awareness; cognitive analysis of what is–and what is not–actually under the client’s control, especially earlier in treatment; trigger identification; and the further development of a compassionate perspective.
Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
- Describe the Compensatory Avoidance Model (CAM) as it explains why substance abuse can be difficult to treat and hard for the patient to give up
- Identify two sources of therapist-client countertransference in work with populations abusing substances
- Discuss metacognitive awareness and how it can be used to manage countertransferential thoughts and feelings
