Description
Psychotherapy, the 12 Steps and Medication Assisted Therapy (MAT) each present unique opportunity to help those who are struggling with addiction. Each approach has developed its own following, which can be antagonistic at times toward the others, even to the point of disseminating false information. Research shows, however, that patient outcomes could be improved by using an individualized mixture of approaches in treatment and aftercare plans. Upon completion, session attendees will be able to list strengths and weaknesses of each approach and discuss the history of conflict between them. Research will also be presented to support the inclusion of all three approaches to increase success in treating opiate addiction. Real life examples and anecdotes will illustrate the benefits of inclusion and the problem with using a single intervention. Programs that successfully integrate these approaches will be examined and strategies for inclusion in attendee’s practices will be presented.

Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to
  • Identify the basics of each approach to opioid dependence treatment, including strengths and weaknesses.
  • Understand the history of antagonism between approaches and the barriers to co-integration.
  • Apply strategies for integration of all three approaches in an effective implementation for improved outcomes.
