Description
Gregory Hobelmann, MD, MPH

Patients with co-occurring chronic pain and substance use disorder are often difficult to treat. Each condition alone can affect individuals physically, emotionally, cognitively and spiritually, leading to decreased quality of life and often debilitation. Clinicians must understand the nature of both disorders and how they interact to best serve patients with comorbid disease. In this session, the presenter will review how neurobiology and the environment create susceptibility to addiction. In addition, we will discuss chronic pain and the devastating effects that it can cause in one’s life. We will then compare and contrast features of patients with each condition and discuss comprehensive, multimodality treatment that requires active patient participation.

Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:

* Gain an understanding of how neurobiology and environment create susceptibility to addiction.
* Review chronic pain and the nature of patients with chronic, debilitating pain conditions.
* Discuss comprehensive treatment for co-occurring pain and addiction.
