Description
This presentation will address effective trauma-informed and trauma-specific treatment of co-occurring substance use disorders and posttraumatic stress and describe the importance of including trauma-informed and trauma-specific interventions in a comprehensive service array. The trauma-informed care model popularized by Community Connections in Washington, D.C., will be referenced, and a number of evidence-based trauma treatments will be described, including trauma-informed motivational enhancement, TREM and Seeking Safety groups, CBT/CPT for trauma, PET, and EMDR. Use of the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Checklist (PCL-5) for assessment and subsequent outcome measurement will also be emphasized.

Steve Wiland is a licensed master social worker and internationally certified alcohol and drug counselor with 28 years of experience working with clinically complex populations, including individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorder, currently serving as the director of Foundations Detroit.

Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Describe the difference between trauma-informed and trauma-specific services.
  • Identify two types of evidence-based, trauma-specific group treatments and three models of evidence-based trauma-specific individual treatments, and why they constitute such an important part of the co-occurring disorders service array.
  • List six no-cost resources to support the development and implementation of trauma-informed and trauma-specific service delivery.
