John Briere, PhD, an associate professor of psychiatry and psychology at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, will explore tools and strategies for addressing these reactions, such as mindfulness; meta-cognitive awareness; cognitive analysis of what is–and what is not–actually under the client’s control, especially earlier in treatment; trigger identification; and the further development of a compassionate perspective.

Upon completion of this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Describe how early attachment disruption and insecurity can lead to underdeveloped emotional regulation capacities and dependence on behavioral avoidance strategies
  • Compare the central ideas of the Compensatory Avoidance Model with those of the Behavioral Addiction Model
  • Discuss how mindfulness training increases metacognitive awareness and reduces reactivity
